Tempo Shifts Gear changes – Music

In a gear change it is mainly the feel of the music that changes; the tempo itself usually stays the same. A new gear can sound lighter, heavier or denser, which makes the music seem to speed up or slow down.

⏱️ Tempo or feel?

In timba the tempo usually stays the same. What changes in a gear change is mostly the feel: the percussion and the bass switch patterns together, which makes the music sound lighter, heavier, fuller or barer.

  • Lighter or denser: a sparse pattern as in marcha abajo feels calmer; a full pattern as in marcha arriba or presión feels faster, even though the pulse stays the same.
  • Half or double feel: some gears space the accents further apart or closer together, so it seems as if the tempo halves or doubles.
  • Real tempo changes: an actual speed-up or slow-down is rarer. You sometimes hear it live, for example when a band pushes the tempo at the end of a song.

💃 For dancers

Stay with the pulse: even when the music suddenly sounds "faster", the beat is often still in the same place. Adjust your energy and style, not straight away your tempo.
