Ponche

A ponche is a single accented note by the horns, backed at the same moment by the timbales or drum kit. A short, hard stab that sticks out above the groove.

🎺 What is a ponche?

  • One hit: not a phrase or riff, but one (or a few) short, powerful notes.
  • Horns plus drums: the timbales or drum kit hit the accent exactly together with the horns, so it lands extra hard.
  • Above the groove: the rhythm section usually keeps playing; the ponche sits on top as an accent.

🧱 Ponche, obligado and bloque

  • Ponche: a single stab.
  • Obligado: a whole fixed, arranged passage that everyone plays together.
  • Bloque: a series of unison hits in the montuno that interrupts the groove.

A bloque is in fact a row of ponches that together form a break.

💃 For dancers

A ponche is a clear accent to dance on: a hit, a stop or an arm accent.
