Agueré Batá toques – Music

Agueré is the batá toque of Ochosi, the Orisha of the hunt and justice.

Character

  • Primary association: Ochosi (hunting, justice, the forest)

According to Proyecto Orunmila's Lucumí dictionary, Agueré is a percussive frenzy on the chachá, dedicated to Ochosi.

Context

Agueré is played when honoring Ochosi in ceremony, particularly in the Guerrero sequence alongside Eleguá and Ogún. Because Ochosi is one of the Warriors received by many practitioners, Agueré is a relatively commonly heard toque in Lucumí ceremonies.

Cross-Lineage Variation

The assignment of toques to Orishas is not always one-to-one. In The Artistry of Afro-Cuban Batá Drumming, Kenneth Schweitzer describes a continuum: from one toque for one Orisha, through one toque for a few or for many Orishas, to toques played for all of them. According to the sources, Agueré belongs to Ochosi alone.
