Obatalá Orishas – Dance

Obatalá is the Orisha of purity, wisdom, and creation — the father of all Orishas and the owner of all human heads. His dancers imitate the soft, bent movements of a very old person.

The dance

According to EcuRed, Obatalá dances according to his path. To honour him, dancers imitate the soft, bent movements of a very old person; in his warrior paths he dances as if wielding his sword.

White Cloth

According to EcuRed, Obatalá always dresses in white and loves everything clean, white and pure. Suns and moons are sewn onto his clothes and he wears eight scarves around his waist; in his warrior paths he wears a red band across his chest. His bead necklaces (elekes) are completely white.

Paths and Variations

EcuRed lists 45 paths of Obatalá, including Oba Moro, Orishanla and Ayagguna, and says that he dances according to his path.

Toques: in the oru seco Obatalá receives one toque, simply called Obatalá; see the Obatalá toque. Oba Moro and Orishanla (Ochanlá) are paths of Obatalá, not toques.
