Oyá Orishas – Dance

Oyá is the Orisha of wind, storms, lightning, and death. Her dance is very frenzied and very fast.

The dance

According to EcuRed, Oyá's dance is very frenzied and very fast, "a bacchanal". She shakes her iruke (horsetail whisk) to cleanse the air of bad influences, and sometimes carries a lit torch in her right hand, making fierce circles as she turns to the left.

The Iruke

According to EcuRed, the iruke is made of black horsehair from a horse's tail. Oyá uses it in the dance to cleanse the air of bad influences.

Colors

According to EcuRed, Oyá's colours are "all except black". She wears a wine-red dress and a skirt with nine stripes of different colours, with scarves and ribbons in nine colours. Her number is 9.

Relationship to Changó

According to EcuRed, Oyá fought as a warrior alongside Changó and Ogún. She went with Changó when he left Oyó and was made queen of Kosso by him; she is regarded as one of his wives.

Toques: Ayalikú, sad and funereal in character, for Oyá as goddess of death (according to Proyecto Orunmila's Lucumí dictionary), and Tui-tui (according to the furius.ca toque database; Proyecto Orunmila links Tui-tui to Changó). See the Oyá toque.
